道教是中华民族固有的宗教，以学道、修道、行道为主要宗旨。由於道教的基本信仰是以「道」 为根本，所以称为「道教」。道教的发源很早，始源於黄帝，有四千七百余年的历史，而道教的教义发扬於春秋时期的老子(道祖)， 成教则於东汉末年的张道陵天师。 道教尊奉《老子》一书为《道德经》，作为教内的主要经典，并相信人通过修炼，可以长生成仙。虽然道教的派别众多，但教义上都以「道」 为 宗旨。

Taoism is the indigenous religion of the Chinese. The key purpose of the religion is to learn the “ Dao ” , cultivate the “ Dao ” , and practise the “ Dao ” . As “ Dao ” is central to the belief of this faith, the religion is called “ Daoism ” or “ Taoism ” . Taoism has existed since the time of the Yellow Emperor some 4700 years ago. Promoted by Lao Tzu during the Spring and Autumn Period, it was organized as a religious movement during the later years of the Eastern Han Dynasty by Celestial Master Zhang Daoling. The Book of Dao and its Virtue (Dao De Jing), regarded as the main text of Taoism, establishes that one can attain immortality through self-cultivation. Although there are many Taoist sects today, their teachings are all based on the principles of “ Dao ” .
